Pineapple Grove ArtWalk in Delray Beach is an outdoor sculpture gallery, presenting the best of international art in a casual setting. The ArtWalk, where visitors stroll among contemporary works of art, is a provocative expression of Delray Beach's unique and diverse cultural identity.
The ArtWalk Committee, founded by Delray Beach citizens in 1998, responded to a civic need to visually enhance, and support the economic growth of the Pineapple Grove district. As a result of this initiative, they have taken an advocacy role in recognizing and supporting the arts within the community. Without fine art museums or public art programs within the immediate neighborhoods, an open-air gallery of sculptures meets the desire to make visual art a part of the daily lives of Delray's adults and children. This open-air gallery can accommodate approximately 30 outdoor sculptures, murals, and temporary installations as part of the significant and changing collection of art, which will serve to inspire and expose residents and visitors alike to the highest level of contemporary arts.
The sculpture collection will feature environmental art, phenomena inspired works, interactive works, music and water features, specialty paving, photography, stone, metal, glass, ceramic works and artful site furnishings, which may be exhibited on building facades, in parks and within pedestrian corridors.
Throughout the year, Delray Beach, an 'All- America City', hosts five major daytime and evening events and 35 minor events, most notably the Delray Affair, Art and Jazz on the Avenue, the Garlic Festival and Photofusion. The success of our downtown has launched Delray Beach as an international destination, attracting over a million visitors per year.
As a year-long, always open display, the ArtWalk will bring visitors to Pineapple Grove, and will be an attraction during non-event days. A distinctive gateway, seen from Atlantic Avenue, provides the signature portal to the ArtWalk, inviting passers-by to veer off Atlantic Avenue to see the offering of this four block commercial area.
Pineapple Grove Main Street, Inc., the umbrella organization for the ArtWalk is a registered not-for-profit 501-3(c). The Pineapple Grove district has been revitalized via partnerships with the City, the Community Redevelopment Agency, and property owners. Over 15 million dollars has been infused into the area in just the last five years. The 2 million-dollar streetscape completed early this summer, has transformed Pineapple Grove Way with its paver brick sidewalks, period street lights, benches, and colorful landscaping which provides a pleasing backdrop for the sculpture sites.
The Pineapple Grove District is steeped with the history of Delray Beach, blending the past with the present and linking Atlantic Avenue's bustling activities with the Old School Square Cultural Arts Center. Embracing our historic past, the local industry and community have provided a beguiling framework for the grass roots development of the ArtWalk, which will evolve to provide educational opportunities and become a catalyst for larger citywide art initiatives.
Public art can:
- create an intriguing environment by providing visual magic;
- be responsive and interactive to its site, challenge it, critique it, and/or expose its significant cultural history;
- reinforce the character of the area, and highlight its relevance;
- have a beneficial impact on public space, define public meaning, and enrich the meaning of life;
- be conditioned to be sonically responsive, meteorologically driven, and effected by seasonal influences;
- educate, stimulate and nourish the soul.
Our inaugural program advisors, Buster Simpson and Michael Singer, both internationally renowned artists, have agreed to lend their technical expertise and guidance. Glenn Weiss is the ArtWalk director.
An art selection panel for the ArtWalk has been established to approve the placement of all art, on both public and private property. The panel will review all resumes and slides of the artists' works. Artists will be selected based on their level of artistic experience and history of work on a similar scale. They must have displayed work in a government, municipal or corporate museum, and have had a one-man show or exhibited at a public art institute within the last five years. The art must be durable, weather and graffiti resistant, comply with city safety and anchoring requirements and neither contain commercial advertising nor be aligned with a corporate logo.
